“You, that’s His Majesty the Emperor, you know!?”
“Is that more important than a steamed bun?”
Yui Mei has two secrets.
First, she retained the memories of her past life. Second, it is highly probable that she is a daughter of the Sai Kingdom’s Emperor.
As a certified die-hard fan of Chinese dramas in her past life, she willingly participated in the court lady selection just for the sake of seeing the imperial harem in the flesh.

Here are some examples from Chapter 1:
- Spoiler: "Yui Mei was raised in the nunnery until she turned seven; by then, she learned about her own story through the gossiping nuns."
- "Her black hair was tinged with a shade of midnight blue; it was a marvelous sight, indeed."
- "She even went to China with her friends to attend fan events; not just once, but multiple times."
The writing style appears forced and pretentious:
- Spoiler: "A beauty, having the lowest status among the empress and imperial wives, originally entered the palace as a court lady. Her plain appearance was what caught the emperor's eye, her hair color being the source of favor. By the way, Yui Mei's hair color came from her mother."
- "Her promotion after giving birth to the emperor's child led to resentment from higher-ranking consorts, despite her lack of connections."
Repetitive sentence structures like "Moreover," "By the way," "Apparently," "Indeed," and "Nevertheless" make the text monotonous.
Lastly, there's an overabundance of commas, often without the Oxford comma, which detracts from the clarity of the sentences:
- Spoiler: "People dressed in exquisite attire watched Yui Mei's group, moving back and forth, likely finding it unusual to see country girls in the capital."
In conclusion, I stopped reading due to poor writing and grammatical issues, which made the reading experience tedious and unenjoyable.
While I initially found it disappointing, it's still a decent read for some light entertainment. One should just mentally set aside any expectations based on typical Chinese novel tropes.
Upon rereading this, I realize I might have forgotten why I originally wrote this review, as it's been three years. Perhaps my opinion could change or the rating, but for now, that's how I remember it.
